Max & Miles Advice for Plant Moms

Written by Max & Miles | May 6, 2021 5:26:50 PM

When you think of your mom or any motherly figure in your life, all the little tidbits of advice she’s given you through the years might start coming to mind. Motherly advice is some of the best advice out there.

In honor of Mother’s Day coming up on May 9th, we asked the Max & Miles team to share some of the best advice they’ve gotten from their moms. Here’s what they said!

“Always believe in yourself.”

“Always look at the glass half full. If it is not, you may be drinking from the wrong one.”

“Be humble, be kind, be open.”

“Anything worth doing is worth doing well.”

“Say what you mean and mean what you say.”

“A place for everything, and everything in its place.”

“Be optimistic, have hope, and try to see the best in people and in life.”

“In life, you can pick to be like a rock or like water. A rock is hard, inflexible, stagnant and sometimes just an obstacle. Be like water in a river. Water is always flowing and changing and it finds its way around obstacles.”

With motherly advice being so invaluable, we’d also like to share some of our best advice for plant moms. Whether you are a new plant mom or a veteran plant parent, it’s always great to hear guidance from others raising their own plant families!

Advice for Plant Moms

Learn about your plants. Do some research on your plant babies. Learn about their origins and how to take care of them. Just like children, each plant in your collection is unique and requires different care needs. Learn how much water and light they require and if there are any special pruning, fertilizing or care needs specific to your plant.

Don’t “over love” your plants. Many common houseplant problems stem from giving your plants too much attention. Although you have the best of intentions, you may be overwatering, over-fertilizing, over adjusting your plant’s location or pot situation. Your plants may not be doing so well because they are OVER all of this extra love. Sometimes over caring for your plants can be just as detrimental to their health as neglect.

Set care reminders. Once you’ve identified the care needs of your plants, set yourself some reminders of when and how to care for them. Watering reminders can help you keep track of your plant’s moisture needs without having to guess if it’s time to water again. You can also set less frequent reminders for when to fertilize, trim or prune, or repot your plants. Whether you jot these notes down on a calendar or planner or set reminders on your phone or computer, you will be happy to have those cues to care for your plants.

Treat yourself and your plants. Being a plant mom is all about enjoying the hobby and lifestyle of caring for your little plant family. Have some fun by occasionally treating your plants to a new decorative pot, plant hanger, or stand. Make caring for your plants even more exciting by treating yourself to a cute new mister or watering can. These functional pieces make great decor on a plant shelf or side table.

Join a plant group. Great minds think alike and connecting with those who share the same interests as you is a great way to find support, share advice and general comradery. Join a plant group to connect with others who are on the same plant parenthood journey that you are. Other plant moms (and dads) are the perfect source to reach out to for advice on plant care or help with an ailing plant. Find plant groups on Facebook or other social media sites. Look up local plant swaps where you can meet up with other plant lovers looking to exchange plants, cuttings, bulbs, seeds and more!
